PDI: Summer Development Plan for Trainee Instructors

1–2 minutes

Make This Summer Count

For many trainee driving instructors, summer can feel like a waiting game. Learners go on holiday, routines change, and test availability can create frustration.

The most successful PDIs use this time differently. They focus on becoming a better instructor, not just getting closer to qualifying.

Focus Beyond Part 3

Passing Part 3 is important, but it’s only the start of your career. The National Standard is about developing safe, responsible and independent drivers.

After each lesson ask yourself:

  • What did the learner discover for themselves?
  • How did I encourage independent thinking?
  • What could I do differently next time?

Those questions build better instructors.

Develop Your Coaching Skills

Good instruction tells learners what to do.

Great instruction helps learners work it out for themselves.

Instead of saying:

“You approached that junction too quickly.”

Try asking:

“What information could have helped you judge the speed better?”

The learner owns the solution, and that’s where real learning happens.

Think Higher Up the GDE Matrix

Safe driving is about far more than clutch control and manoeuvres.

Use lessons to explore:

  • Distractions
  • Passenger pressure
  • Fatigue
  • Risk-taking
  • Decision-making

The goal isn’t simply passing a test. It’s creating safer drivers for life.

Final Thought

The instructors who thrive aren’t always the fastest qualifiers. They’re the ones who never stop learning.
