ADI: Preventing Burnout in Driving Instructors

1–2 minutes

The Risk We Don’t Always See

As driving instructors, we’re experts at helping learners identify risk.

But are we as good at spotting it in ourselves?

Long hours, test delays, learner anxiety and business pressures can gradually lead to burnout.

And burnout doesn’t just affect wellbeing. It affects lesson quality and performance too.

Recognising the Signs

Burnout often appears gradually:

  • Reduced patience
  • Mental fatigue
  • Lack of motivation
  • Poor concentration
  • Feeling drained after every lesson

If these signs sound familiar, it’s worth taking notice.

A Full Diary Isn’t Always Success

Many instructors measure success by how many lessons they teach each week.

The reality?

A packed diary can sometimes be a fast route to exhaustion.

The best instructors focus on sustainability, not simply availability.

Protect Your Performance

Consider:

  • Building proper breaks into your day
  • Setting realistic working hours
  • Scheduling time away from the car
  • Investing in CPD that renews your enthusiasm for instructing

Just as we teach learners to manage risk, we must manage our own.

Final Thought

Your car is important. Your diary is important.

But your greatest business asset is you.

Protecting your wellbeing isn’t a luxury. It’s a professional responsibility that benefits both you and your learners.
