PDI: Turning Faults into Learning Opportunities

1–2 minutes

Every Fault Has Value

Many trainee instructors worry when a learner makes mistakes.

In reality, faults are often where the best learning happens.

The goal isn’t to create fault-free lessons. It’s to help learners understand why a fault occurred and how they can avoid it in the future.

Don’t Be Too Quick to Correct

It’s tempting to jump in with the answer.

Instead, give the learner space to think.

Try questions such as:

  • What were you noticing at that point?
  • What options did you have?
  • What would you do differently next time?

This develops self-awareness and encourages independent thinking, which sits at the heart of the National Standard.

Focus on the Cause, Not the Fault

A missed mirror check is rarely just about mirrors.

It could be:

  • Poor planning
  • A lack of awareness
  • Information overload
  • Rushing decisions

Looking beyond the fault helps learners address the root cause rather than simply fixing the symptom.

Create a Positive Learning Environment

Learners make most progress when they feel comfortable making mistakes.

A fault shouldn’t feel like a failure.

It should feel like feedback.

When learners understand that errors are part of the learning process, they’re more willing to reflect honestly and take ownership of their development.

Final Thought

The best instructors don’t just identify faults. They turn them into opportunities for learning, discussion and growth.

That’s where lasting progress is made.
